George Street Playhouse is poised to have a new home. Thanks to a partnership between the City of New Brunswick, New Brunswick Development Corporation, and other agencies, the playhouse’s longtime home is being demolished to pave the way for the construction of a new state-of-the-art complex, which will open in the fall of 2019.
The new complex will house two stages. The first will be intimately sized, while the other will be much larger and well suited for plays and musicals. The larger theater will have 475 seats, an orchestra pit, and an expansive backstage. The complex will feature a bar, elevators, numerous bathrooms, and state-of-the-art temperature controls in the seating areas.
For the next two years, as the new complex is being built, George Street Playhouse will be housed at the former New Jersey Museum of Agriculture in New Brunswick.
